In your pro list: "Xander hiding behind Buffy when he finds out Dracula's actually there."

"When things get rough, he just hides behind his Buffy."

One great thing about Buffy is that the writers don't use pauses in the plot and character development to generate comedy. I understand that writing style in some shows, but Buffy is such a unique television show so I can't see using that justification for why Willow consoled Spike.

That being said, I don't really mind that scene. I justified Willow's response when watching the scene with some combination of the ideas already mentioned here. Willow knows she has no chance of besting Spike with him focused on her. She doesn't know the full effect of the chip so she may believe that Spike will just snap her neck if she tries to run or fight. Willow is also a very compassionate person, so it makes sense that she starts to feel empathy for Spike. The insecurity makes a lot of sense too, for the obvious reasons.

Anyways, I think I have way over-analyzed a comedic scene. I can just kind of see where Willow is coming from.

I agree whole-heartedly with Gemma. It is easy to dislike season 1 of Buffy because it pales in comparison with the rest of the show. When I watch other shows, however, I realize that season one of Buffy is still an outstanding show with great acting and some awesome writing.

I just listened to the commentary of this episode and apparently the drowning was a symbol of baptism and rebirth into a darker Buffy. That annoyed me a little, especially since that symbolism was already done in a much more moving way in Prophecy Girl. I also don't really understand why they would choose that moment for such dramatic symbolism since it just got swept up in the action. It was interesting to hear the thought process though.

Ah, this is really such a quintessential Buffy episode. I forgot how amazing it is. One second I found myself laughing at all the silly little antics and the next moment I found myself crying at how the trust Buffy had for Giles was shattered. I am pretty sure this episode is one of my favorites, but I do tend to say that after every episode I watch.
