I notice that in the fight scene when Tara's family comes in and see her on the ground after being hit her dad shows genuine concern, which almost counts as non-one-sidedness...maybe?

My favorite part is the Xander-lunch lady staredown at the end followed by his absolutely flailing "It's rat poison!" as he knocks people's lunch trays all over the place.

"Where the Wild Things Are" | View Comments3 | MerryNov 30, 2010
This episode is just kind of painful to watch. Cringeworthy. Besides the conversation with Spike and Anyay, Giles singing, and the recurring theme of frat parties being riddled with supernatural evils, this episode just...sucks. I can't even find a way to say that eloquently because it's not worth it.

"Season 7 Review" | View Comments4 | MerryNov 30, 2010
God, these reviews are good.

Season 7....ah, still not sold. Much like season 4, there are a lot of individual episodes I love but the season as a whole doesn't work out so well. There's more good than bad for sure, but it's not enough for me. But my main problem with season 7 is that a lot of the last half of it felt kind of...unBuffylike. Even season 6, which was so different from any other season of Buffy, reeked of Buffyness. This one kind of lost that for me. I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it is that makes this season stick out like a sore thumb to me, but there's just something about it.

And while I hate the potentials a lot less than some people, I still hate them. I would rather watch "I Robot, You Jane" on repeat than suffer through the potentials storyline. Especially Kennedy.

Overall, though, I do like season 7. I don't think it deserves the amount of hate that it gets, but I do wish it had been a lot better.

Least favorite part of the episode: Angel. Oh, there were a few laughs involved, I admit. But his appearance did feel really, really forced. Of course, I'm one of those fans who wished Angel had gone straight to LA after coming back from Hell (though with maybe a one or two episode detour so everyone could deal with him being alive). But then again, without Angel in this episode we wouldn't have gotten one of my favorite gems: Spike's Angel drawing. Hilarious.

Also didn't like: Amanda, Spike, and freakin' Anya died and Kennedy survived. There is no excuse for that. Yeah, Spike comes back for AtS 5, but still. You can add me to the corner of those who wished Kennedy had been one of the unfortunate non-survivors in this episode.

Other favorite gem: When Buffy's looking at the hoarde of (alleged) ubervamps and saying "I'm not worried!" and Rona freaking out and saying she was flashing back to Xander's bathroom speech. Loved that.

Overall, I really like this episode. Not on any of my favorite lists, but it could have been a lot worse considering what we got in "Empty Places" and "End of Days." It was a solid turnaround from some pretty lackluster lead up eps (minus "Touched"). Though I will always be grumbly that my two favorite characters (after Buffy) ended up dying (Spike and Anya).

"Lies My Parents Told Me" | View Comments6 | MerryNov 26, 2010
Hmm, I had no idea this was such a polarizing episode. I really love it. Particularly:
-The conversation in the principal's office with Buffy, Giles and Wood and Wood's confusion over the chip/trigger/soul pickle with Spike
-When the group asks Spike about the song his mom used to sing, he says she sang it to him when he was a baby...right after the flashback showing her singing it to him when he's around 30 or so
-Drusilla's reaction to Spike wanting to take his mother with them on their killing shenanigans
-The cut to Spike as the trigger is broken as he blocks a blow from Wood and does a slow, badass turn to look at him.

The only thing I don't necessarily like about this episode is Giles' behavior towards Buffy. I kind of get it, but I think distracting her as Wood tried to kill Spike was maybe a bit too far. I still don't see him as being a bad guy or anything in this episode, but I think it was a little too calculated even for Giles.

I don't think the Willow/Xander 'thing' should take points off this episode. One of the reasons this episode gets a P in my book is the fact that this is the episode where that silly 'thing' ends!

Gnarl scares the hell out of me. The Gentlemen provided probably the only two moments in the series when I actually jumped in fright (when the Gentleman passes right in front of Olivia at the window and when the straightjacketed lackey pops out at Buffy), but Gnarl creeps me WAY more. It's probably just because I'm squeamish and get incredibly naseous when he's peeling off Willow's skin, but it's still really, really, creepy.

This is one of my favorite S7 episodes, mostly because of Alyson's making me like Willow again. Not every character could flay someone alive and then become a favorite again! One of my favorite moments is when Anya says something about it getting a little sexy after they did the spell and then Willow raising an eyebrow with a "yeah it did!" expression and then abruptly saying she had to go. Hilarious!

I have a lot of problems with S7. It's my second least favorite season (after S1, obviously), but none of the problems I have are about Spike. I can see why some people would be annoyed that he got so much attention in S7. I disagree, because I think the Potentials are the reason the rest of the Scoobies lost attention (Spike, after all, WAS a main character), but I get it. But Spike, a mysognist? Oh, please. The idea actually makes me laugh a little. He's definitely a little delusional (and at times v. clueless) about the women in his life pre-soul, but never a woman-hater.

The scythe bothers me. It's just a big weapon that is somehow awesome. It's like the writers were fighting to put something in that could be some "special" game changer. But then again, I think most of the end of S7 was pretty bad, plot/writing-wise.

I might not hate the Potentials as much if it weren't for Kennedy, who I CAN'T. STAND. The only time I think I ever loved Faith as a character was when she told off Kennedy in this episode.

"Season 6 Review" | View Comments10 | MerryJun 4, 2010
Not gonna lie, I wasn't a huge fan of S6 the first time I viewed it (my favorite part of the season was seeing Spike walking around without a shirt half the time). I missed the lighthearted funny BtVS, and allowed myself to overlook all the great stuff that went on in S6 outside of the mediocre plots and lack of humor. Sometime after my first viewing of the series I found this website, so on the second viewing of the series I read each review after I viewed each episode. There was a lot of deeper stuff going on in S6 that I hadn't appreciated the first viewing, and having it pointed out made me LOVE S6. Still not my favorite (will always be S2) and I only hate Dawn a little bit less than before, but it's definitely moved up a few slots on my list.

"Gingerbread" | View Comments11 | MerryMay 26, 2010
70...hmmm, methinks this score is a little low!

This episode is my go-to Buffy episode when I'm in the mood for Buffy. It's got some of the funniest dialogue all season, and it actually feels very 90s Halloween-ish...maybe that's because it kind of reminds me of Hocus Pocus and I love anything that feels 90s fantasy, but I digress.

I this episode gets underrated because it's kind of campy (which I love when done well, which I think this episode is). It deals with something very relevent in Buffyverse, the occult, and how a society could potentially react to the truth. Of course this is an exaggerated case because it's a spell, but it's still interesting.

I love this episode. Obviously, it's not a "great" episode in the grand scheme of the series (would not make my top 25 list by far), but it has this kind of genuine 90s feel to it that is the same reason I love "Gingerbread". So campy! Though having been a competitive swimmer for 10 years, I agree with Austin- those swimmers on the starting blocks looked RIDICULOUS. Could have done without the scene with the monsters swimming in the ocean - it was just weird.
