Not as bad as I remembered but still one of the less good episodes. This time round I quite liked the willow story it was a good way to have her re-examine what she did. However I am a massive willow-tara fan and wish that she had held off on her relationship with kennedy for a bit. The chip story was good in principle and a nice shout out to riley with ass-face etc. However the amount of people sent to them and going to the inititiative to find them did seem sloppy. I liked the giles mislead but can see why people wouldn't. I'd say C rather than D, however it is my least favourite episode in 7. "Potential" | View Comments3 | ChrisDec 4, 2009 Theres an argument that this is also forshadowing the dawn xander relationship in season 8 "Selfless" | View Comments4 | ChrisNov 20, 2009 Gsilver I had never made that connection before. That guy will hereafter me known as lloyd! Its interesting to think of him as a vengence demon, he was granting spikes wish, spike had been wronged( whether you argue that it was by buffy in season 6 or by drusilla killing him), and the afterafects hurt spike as well to an extent. Its classic vengence demon behaviour and i'd never noticed it before. D'hoffryn has amazing here, the unltimate mix of scary and comic. I wish he had been used more, an amazing character. "Entropy" | View Comments5 | ChrisNov 6, 2009 Just rewatched this episode. Its one ofm favourites, i'd say it might even be perfect. Every single character gets relevent in-character development, especially anya who is fantastic in this episode. The complains of the last few posters about xander. He is a flawed character, he's not suposed to be perfect, he does put buffy on a pedastool and shows irrational hatred of some of her love interests. However I think that he generally is a good guy and his hearts in the right place despite often saying or doing the wrong thing. But I would argue that instead of being a reason to hate him, it is what makes the growth he achieves more interesting. This episode especially is a turning point for him as his world breaks down around him. It leads to his realisations about himself and a change for the better, the aforementioned flaws are far less present in season 7. The only time i can recall him being a jerk is the "point slightly to my left" and slight distrust of spike. Given his pain at the time and the first using spike to kill people I'd say even these were justified. Back to the episode. I'd just like to say that Tara's speach is amazing and one of my favourite moments in the buffyverse. and you missed out one of the best quotes ever. "technicly your one and a half" "Normal Again" | View Comments6 | ChrisNov 6, 2009 Have now rewatched this again, and it was better than i remembered, the sunnydale stuff was well done and there was nice development on all the storylines. however despite the interesting ramifications for buffy's psyche. I still raise the following points that in my opinion should lower its score. The way the poison worked was not explained. Would it case anyone to be in an assylum, bring out your worse fears? Relive bad experiences? (-5) The complete disregard for early season continuity, even if joyce "forgot" when she was told again surely she'd remember. (-5) The dreadfull ending (-5) The fact that buffy wouldn't have mentioned it in the mental health storylines in season 5 (-5) Thus in my opinion whilst good in many ways it should only get about 80. Though i have changed my mind about it being the worse episode. "Older and Far Away" | View Comments7 | ChrisOct 23, 2009 This episode is severely underated in my opinion "Gone" | View Comments8 | ChrisOct 20, 2009 Just a thought, no-one remembers andrew's flying monkies, could this be an event changed by the introduction of dawn? Just an idea. I'm aware its not truly logical but thats the only other massive memory change. "Checkpoint" | View Comments9 | ChrisAug 30, 2009 I don't have a problem with the knights and I love the combination of comedy in this episode with plot advancement aswell. Interviews =comedy gold Glory at buffy's = scary gold Knight fight = good fight scene End speech = Pure awesomeness I might have even put this episode as perfect. "willow's a demon" "No Place Like Home" | View Comments10 | ChrisAug 24, 2009 Just rewatched this and I think that the P is justified though i was surprised when i first saw the score on the review list. "Anne" | View Comments11 | ChrisAug 23, 2009 I don't know how you can not have a or quote for buffy's Ghandi impression. I think its one of the best lines in the show! "Superstar" | View Comments12 | ChrisAug 21, 2009 I'd agree with many other that this should be 85 . Whilst it may not be an arc episode not episode has to be and many of the best are not. The episode needs aclaim in my opinion for 4 reasons. 1) Introducing the kind of spell to bring in dawn 2) The amount of prop detail ( the cereal, the cards, the posters etc) 3) Showing how buffy still figured things out without her experience 4) Being so hilarious and rediculous And in responce to a previous critisism it has been said (i think in commentry) that anya did not react to bunny on purpose because it was an alternate universe. "Normal Again" | View Comments13 | ChrisAug 21, 2009 This is one of the few episodes i have only watched twice and as such i may be being unfair to it. However I think that this is one of the worst epidodes of buffy rather than one of the best I prefer where the wild things are!. The asylum plot device has been done many times before and whilst the episode had some intrinsic buffiness that made it better it is still and bad plot device. I am shocked that so many people liked it, whilst theier are interesting conotations with buffy's psyche the complete disregard for continuity with joyce's knowledge of this and buffy never mentioning it(even when tara was mentally ill) shows a disregard for the viewer in my opinion and just seems to be a vehicle for buffy to attack the gang. Despite this I would probably rate it higher if there has not been the end scene possibly suggesting that the assylum was real. I bought season 6 last ( due to availability) and consequently have only seen it all the way through twice ( though many more for favourites!) I am currently rewatching the whole series ( currently early season 5) and perhaps in retrospect this episode may seem better. I like the suggestion that dawn changed when joyce found out but that should have been mentioned again or more explicit if the case. I except that many folk like the episode but giving it a perfect over,Earshot, the yoko factor,Storyteller etc is beyond me. "The Chain" | View Comments14 | chrisSep 6, 2007 Why would this girl need to pad her bra to look like Buffy? That makes no sense at all. Actually, I think it's an intended pun on comic book art. Sometime before S8 started, I read an interview with Whedon about how he stopped reading comic books for quite a while because of the way women were depicted. Ah, yes, here [http://www.tvguide.com/News-Views/Interviews-Features/Article/default.aspx?posting={0C084F89-5673-43B9-9FFC-022578DAA927}] it is, scroll about to the middle. "Smashed" | View Comments15 | chrisJul 12, 2007 Great review, I'm glad I'm not the only one who actually enjoyed this episode (most of the time at least). I agree with your review completely except for the part with Spike, where I rather agree with Kim. I don't think he actually *wants* to kill that woman at that moment - I rather presume that he thinks he is *expected* to do that (because that's what vampires do) and therefore he has to talk himself into it for quite a while. Compare it with "Tabula Rasa" - he asks "Joan" that if he's a vampire why doesn't he want to kill her? (And he obviously doesn't want to kill anybody else in Tabula Rasa - at *any* time - even though he's completely lacking soul *and* memory at that time) I don't think you can explain that solely with conditioning. In my eyes, this must go far deeper into his personality at that point. Of course, Spike is still evil, he doesn't have a soul and while I do think he genuinely doesn't want to hurt anybody in the Scoobie Gang anymore at that point, his lack of conscience doesn't allow him to comprehend which actions are actually hurtful and which aren't. And which actions are morally wrong and which aren't. He doesn't have an idea what morale *really* is, he doesn't understand it, he only acts because he learned in which way the Scoobies had responded to his actions and thus he behaves accordingly (look for examples of Spike being evil in S6 and you see what I mean). "The Long Way Home Pt. 3" | View Comments16 | chrisJul 12, 2007 I do think you're quite a bit too negativ in your review - two thirds of it sound like quite a rant. On the other hand, I do think your rating itself is very reasonable. First of all, somehow I don't see your problems #1 and #2. As for problem #1, well, the cliffhangers of issues #1 and #2 (now the numbering gets confusing ;-)) were actually "Who is Amy's boyfriend?" and "Who is that guy in Buffy's dream?" - and so I don't think you can call the resolution to those cliffhangers "fan service". Perhaps it's because I actually hoped it wasn't Warren and never cared that much about Ethan (don't get me wrong: he's a great character, and I loved his appearances in the series - it's just that I'm not really intrigued by him as much as others are) that I don't feel very "serviced" by those two appearing in the comics. As for problem #2 (confusing narrative): While I still feel that I have to get accustomed to reading comic books myself, from my perception, there wasn't much of a difference between issues #1, #2 and #3 - I didn't find #3 particularly confusing (compared to #1 and #2). But that's only my perception. Regarding the rest: I completely agree with your points regarding Giles - his story line has been quite confusing. On the other hand, the cover text of issue #6 promisses that he'll play an integral role in that issue so I'm hopeful we're going to see more of him then. As I already pointed out in your discussion board, I agree that if Willow actually resurrected Kennedy, I'd be very upset. The only problem I have with your review is that you take for granted that she actually did it - but her comments are a bit ambiguous. I agree that we don't know enough about the mythology of the Buffyverse in order to actually think of another way to have Kennedy resurrected, so Willow being the responsible party is the only guess we can make right now. But my point is that just because we can't think of another way doesn't mean that there isn't any. I'd rather want to wait and see - perhaps there's an explanation that's in-character yet not contrived. As for Buffy calling Willow out due to her comments: Remember Selfless? Buffy didn't call Xander out as he suggested Willow could resurrect Anya's victims [Oh, by the way: Xander stated they were mystical deaths even though only the creature itself was brought to Sunnydale mystically - the actual death was caused by the creature ripping out the hearts of the victims - so in my eyes there still is a chance that Warren's death could be regarded as mystical within the mythology of the Buffyverse. On the other hand, Xander could just have said that grasping at straws.]. Buffy didn't say anything in response to that. And Willow said "I don't have anywhere near that kind of power. I didn't have that kind of power when [...]". She didn't say "we shouldn't do it", she said she couldn't! And Buffy didn't comment on that either. And later on Anya has D'Hoffryn reverse the spell she did - thus resurrecting the victims - nobody mentions any S6-like repercussions for the victims at that point either. So while I agree that I currently can't immagine that Willow actually resurrected Kennedy and I really hope that Whedon will come up with a *much* better explanation, I don't object to the fact that Buffy didn't say anything at that point even if Willow should have done it (which doesn't necessarily mean Buffy wouldn't do that at a later time with less stuff going on around her). Finally, reading Frankly, I'm already tired of it. If Whedon brings back another dead character, he's really going to lose me.: Please, this is far below the usual (high) standard of your reviews. Give the comics a chance, wait at least until the first 3 oder 4 arcs have been released before you decide if the comics really suck. [Oh, just a technical sidenote - a preview function for the comments would be nice.] "The Long Way Home Pt. 2" | View Comments17 | ChrisJun 2, 2007 I'd really appreciate it if we could get the review on Issue 3.. which is without a doubt the best one yet. For God's sake, issue 4 comes out on Wednesday!! I understand if you're busy.. but can we please try to continue with season eight, as well as the rest of the show. | |
I would put this as a perfect episode. The comedy, drama and character development all at their best. Laughing out loud near the start and struglling not to cry at the end.
