"No Future for You Pt. 2" | View Comments1 | AustinFeb 1, 2008
I was impressed that Faith held her character when she woke up and Gigi told her that they were different from everyone else and she said 'duh?' like 'of course were royalty' or at least lead Gigi to believe that was what she was saying. It was also really funny.

when faith(as buffy) says burn it about the lipstick is she playing the part or actually showing revulsion for and trying to distance herself from her former lifestyle?

lol Nether realm :)

Yeah, I didn't get the 7-3-0 either until I looked it up online. What I don't get is why the refer to Dawn as Little Miss Muffet, I mean I caught all the references, and I know they spell it out that Dawn is Little Miss Muffet, I just don't understand the significance of it.

I also really liked how coordinated and cool the scoobies were while Joyce was freaking out - like when she asks if these are Vampires and Willow cooly tosses Buffy a stake and then responds "no when he doesn't dust

Interesting note that Angel gives Buffy an old (I think 1st edition) book and in real life SMG collects old books thought that was a nice touch

My Favorite Quote from this ep and one of my all time favs is this:

Xander: But gee Mr. White if Clark and Lois get all the good stories, I never be a good reporter!

Giles: Huh?

Xander: Jimmy Olson Joke sir, pretty much gonna be lost on you.

Giles: Sorry

Xander: It's OK

and then later

Cordelia: You must feel like Jimmy Olson

Xander: Yeah, I was just talkin' to Gi-Hey!

Just a thought but do you think Joss and co could have gotten away with ending the series with Buffy dead? I know at one point they didn't know if another channel was going to pick this up and they were definitely going to kill her so do you think the fans would have rioted if this had been the end?

I think it has something to do with expectations and how critical a viewer one is. I don't watch much tv at all so I am much more easily entertained than others and so it follows that I was never actually dissapointed by a Buffy ep, not even IRYJ or WTWTA

Dude, I never really got why there would be such a weird clause that would cause Angel to lose his soul if he achieved true happiness, But I just read a line in The Watchers Guide that was cut from this ep that has Jenny's Uncle saying:
- QUOTE -
You are an abomination, The day you stop suffering for your crimes, you are no longer worthy of a human soul.
I don't know about you but that really explained a lot especially the part about him no longer being worthy of a human soul. I really think they should have left that in there

I think it is funny that Willow accuses Johnathan of delving into black magic, when they are the two people who eventually do get into it.

"Beer Bad" | View Comments25 | AustinSep 23, 2007
I really like Beer Bad because: I don't drink (I'm underage and believe it or not I am alergic to alcohol - I was in a lot of medicine a number of years ago and whenever I took those medicines, I would just get worse), and so I have no problem with them bashing beer. Besides, Buffy is soooo funny when she is "cave slayer" it's great!

"Killed by Death" | View Comments26 | AustinSep 20, 2007
I like how they showed Buffy pretending to be a super heroine at a young age. I think it's interesting that Buffy was heroine, kind of a little extra foreshadowing that she'd always had the desire to be a heroine in her, maybe that is something that is in every potential, the desire to help and save people. That's weird to think about, that Buffy was at one point a potential.

"Becoming Pt. 2" | View Comments27 | AustinSep 20, 2007
What doesn't make sense to me is that if Joyce had been told at one point that Buffy was the slayer, why didn't she react more along the lines of "Not that again" Admitedly, I guess they hadn't thought that far ahead and it really would have sounded weird, I Just think that it is a little continuity issue.

I agree that there is no real big bad in the sense that it is presented as something clearly evil early on in the season and attempts something destructive in the final few episodes. I never thought about life being the big bad but that really makes a lot of sense.

About being paid, well she doesn't officially work for the council since she died, but in the wider perspective, I don't think slayers get paid because usually, they are called and die so young that they never really have to support themselves, Buffy wouldn't have had to this season had her mother not died, and even then I have trouble believing that her life insurance money would be gone (they mention hospital bills, WHAT bills?) especially with Anya around, you'd think they would have had her handle their investments. (In reality you are supposed to have 10-12x your annual income in life insurance and then put that money into a 10% yield investment and live off the interest.

It annoys me to no end about how inaccurately CPR is portrayed in the movies today. They act like it is a magical switch that turns someones life back on, after only a few seconds of administering it. While Buffy may have many qualities that set it apart from the rest of TV, accurate portrayal of administering CPR is not one of them.

A couple of points:
- CPR is not supposed to revive people, it is simply a stop-gap measure to buy time and minimize brain damage while EMTs are on the way with equiptment that is much more effective at reviving victims

- The proper ratio of chest compressions to breaths is 30:2, for some reason, TV seems to focus on the breathing rather than the compressions (ok, there is the "kissing" factor) when in reality the compressions are the most important factor and the breaths can even be skipped without significant impact because the chest is moving up and down which draws in a little air.

- If you are lucky enough to revive a person via CPR, they will not wake up and immediately be ready to save the world. Ok Buffy has advanced healing powers but even these do not work that quickly.

- A 911 operator would never tell someone to stop administering CPR and just wait for the EMTs after only a few seconds. Admitedly, Buffy did tell her the body was cold, indicating that it was probably far too late, however you should never stop until a doctor pronounces the victim dead.

- On the plus side, they did mention that Buffy cracked a rib, which is to be expected if you administer CPR for any significant length of time, I myself did not know that this would happen until two years after I became a Lifeguard and I was in a refresher CPR course, I am glad that I never had to administer it before that because I probably would have stopped going when that happened.

Anyways, thats my rant on CPR... just remember, never give up!

"All the Way" | View Comments34 | AustinAug 31, 2007
While I agree that the whole plot was lame, I think it aduquately conveys the idea the writers were trying to get across, that Dawn wants attention and like many teenagers, is acting out to get it. I think they are also commenting on the dangers of bad parenting too; if Buffy had taken the time to verify where Dawn was going, nothing would have happened. Since she doesn't though, Dawn almost gets killed, which could very well happen in real life, though admitedly not from a vamp. I think they drive the point home even further when she doesn't even take the time to punish Dawn right after she almost got killed Most parents would have woken up and smelled the coffee by this time, and I don't think Buffy's extenuating curcumstances are anywhere near a good excuse for not taking the time to punish Dawn.

Did anybody notice the "keep off the grass" sign in front of the old guy's house, I wonder if that was part of the set or if they forgot to remove it before filming. I'm guessing the latter.

Sometimes I am really slow, I never thought about the loan shark being a shark lol.

Anyways, an important point I think you missed mikejer is that since, like you said, everyone retains their acquired instincts and only loose their memories, we get to see the true nature of the characters. For instance, Xander is initially attracted to Willow (ok, it was a girl and she was resting her head on him but still...) but he never once feels anything toward Anya, big foreshadowing. In addition, Dawn acts very childish, bringing us back to how she wants to be treated like an adult but is not really ready for it. Giles remains Mr. Cool and Buffy takes charge and handles herself admirably, which goes to show that she can in fact make it through this.

I agree, great CGI during the spell and the resurrection, I'm surprised that you didn't address the issue about Buffy actually being brought back, while I am by no means complaining, I am happy for two more seasons and think that Chosen is a much better series finale than gift, it seems to cheapen her death now that she has died twice and come back. well, at lest they didn't resolve it in one ep like in WSWB (2x01).

I really appreciate season 6's uniqueness because the big bad is actually a member of the scoobies and not an evil creature that can be thwarted and killed with (relative) ease. I think this also goes much further with the friend-gone-bad idea that the Angelus arc did because his was an accidental conversion and he had no intention of ever going there, while Willow, though torn by grief and anger, on some level, knew what she was doing and chose to go down that path. This is a fascinating season and I cannot wait for the rest to be reviewed as I am looking forward to some great conversations and opinions. Keep up the great work!!

"Bargaining Pt. 2" | View Comments40 | AustinAug 30, 2007
And Spike didn't take out his anger on and break down the tower because?....

The camera work is excellent, they really convey the extent of Buffy's disorientation through her PoV shots. Have to agree that SMG puts out a great performance here and is no cave-man simply having a very bad hair day.

"Season 5 Review" | View Comments41 | AustinAug 30, 2007
On the subject of Glory's sporadic appearances, I think the writers were compensating for the uber-weak S4 arc and so they introduce her very early and then come up with at least a somewhat plausable excuse why she, being invulnrerable, didn't up and squish Buffy after blood ties. I find myself believing that her lazyness and having to share body-time with Ben heavily impairs her movements and plans. Besides, with such overwhelming non-arc episodes like FFL and the Body, I really didn't find myself wondering "where's Glory, she should be causing trouble by now." One final note, our perception of time may be skewed: though episodes were aired weekly, they, especially the non-arc ones, often take place consecutively. For instance, Triangle, Body and Forever take place in the span of less than a week, while almost a month has passed between viewings. I can buy that between Ben time and long visits to the mall, that Glory would leave the Scoobies alone long enough for their lives to get turned upside down by Joyce's death.

Anyone notice at the party when Riley changes the song 'cause willow doesn't want to listen to the Dingoes, the song it changes to is the one Veruca sings?

Or at least I think it is...

"Fool for Love" | View Comments43 | AustinAug 29, 2007
The final shot in FFL or TG?

"Shadow" | View Comments44 | AustinAug 29, 2007
I think that in hindsight we can see that it is not going to work when Riley boasts in S4 about bagging 17 hostiles, and then gets the wind completely taken out of his sails when he hers how many (hundreds?) Buffy has killed. My opinion on their relationship is that while it never would have worked in the long run, it was exactly what Buffy needed after Angel and to a lesser extent, Parker: a somewhat normal guy who would be there for her.

"Listening to Fear" | View Comments45 | AustinAug 29, 2007
I'd like to make a comment about something no one has mentioned yet and that is about how Riley's vamphore thing is affecting him. As is customary with this series, I think this is a pretty obvious metaphor for a drug addiction and the effect it has on you and your friends, if I'm not mistaken, he misses patrol to get a fix and as a result, the scoobies find themselves in real danger. it's also interesting to note how quickly it begins to affect him. He just started last week and already he is abandoning commitments and hurting his friends.

Also I'm glad that Joyce has Buffy promise to take care of Dawn, because even though she makes it through the operation, I have no doubt that Buffy is thinking about her promise in the Gift. I would even go as far as to say that if she hadn't made this promise (everyone knows how strong death-bed promises are) that she might have even considered Giles' PoV about sacrificing Dawn for the greater good. Not that she would have likely done it, but it would have no doubt have been considered an option.

"Into the Woods" | View Comments46 | AustinAug 29, 2007
I've never understood why Buffy does run after Riley. I don't think either of them where under the delusion that it would ever work between them in the long run. I've thought that she just doesn't want him to leave in that manner, but I have no doubt that it would have ended badly in the end.

"Into the Woods" | View Comments47 | AustinAug 29, 2007
Oh yeah, I always thought it was interesting that she didn't tell Riley that she was at the helipad, it is interesting to think what would have happened if he came back single under the same circumstances and he had been beating himself up for leaving her and then they have a big sloppy reunion, of course, that wouldn't have worked on BtVS but it is an interesting prospect. Anyway I admire Buffy's respect and maturity for not bringing that up and I'm really glad she got along with Sam

Since when can she trust him? Since he tried to get his chip out and bite her or since doing his best to ruin her and Riley's relationship and then rubbing it in her face?

Anyways, I love this ep, she's got the coucil in check and she manages to make the entire gang proud of her and the part they play in it. Definiately A material :)

"Blood Ties" | View Comments50 | AustinAug 29, 2007
Ok, so at the end was Dawn lying or could she really not remember that ben was Glory? Because if she had told the group, Giles would have no doubt have done what he does in gift, either way I guess it had to be this way, let the audience find out but not the characters.

Harmony, a girl can't remember how long they've been together, lol!

I always thought that the sub-joke about Joyce not feeling safe was because Giles was there (think band candy) anyways it's always been funnier to me that way.

"Buffy vs. Dracula" | View Comments52 | AustinAug 28, 2007
I really like this episode, it is much better than any other openings so far and I found myself wondering at some point in my first viewing of season 4 why Buffy hadn't faced Dracula yet. I was also pleased that he wasn't interested in ending the world as lots of the MOTWs are, instead, he is here for Buffy and I agree with Libmax about Martin's performance, personally I consider this to be an A episode for many of the reasons stated by Libmax and yourself.

"Real Me" | View Comments53 | AustinAug 28, 2007
Well, there is a twelve year gap between me and my younger sister(same parents too!) and frankly I think she is adorable, but then she isn't a teen yet and I won't be around the house when she is so I guess that doesn't really count. Non-the-less, I really like Dawn, mostly because of all she goes through, and being tossed into the middle of evil-central, while all the other characters have had four years to process it. I think she has a very strong personality, which really shows up in season seven when Buffy is preoccupied with he potentials, and then how she handles herself not being a potential (don't remember the specific episode). I think a lot of what she brings to the show is how Buffy or any of the rest of the gang would have grown up living on the hellmouth had they been aware of its presence and yet not been apart of the scoobies. I'm glad they try to keep her innocence intact because it throws into sharp contrast how much of a normal childhood and adolescence Buffy lost when she became a slayer. Ok I've rambled long enough.

"The Replacement" | View Comments54 | AustinAug 28, 2007
I think it's interesting at the very end, we get a glimpse of "Seeing and Knowing" Xander, that the writers chose him as the person Riley reveals his fears to is great planning, although I couldn't decide what the veiwer is supposed to make of his final, observant expression. Any ideas?

"Season 4 Review" | View Comments55 | AustinAug 28, 2007
I like the way season 4 ended because if it had been all emotional and weepy like S2,5,6,7 and to some extent 3, then by the time the later seasons rolled arround, it would have gotten kind of old. I like that she didn't have a painful breakup with a boyfriend or a (near)death experiance, instead this season leaves me excited and ready for a fantastic season 5 and beyond. I agree that the arc was lame but I really did enjoy Buffy getting to experiance a somewhat normal relationship, I think she deserved it after all the pain she's gone through. Being in my first year of college myself, I can really relate to the entire gangs experiances.

Anyways, I dont like to rank the differnt seasons against each other (besides season 1 which is obviously the worst) since they are all unique and have their positive and negative qualities.

"Doomed" | View Comments56 | AustinAug 26, 2007

"We find out later that even though Buffy decides to have a relationship with Riley, she never does fully open up her heart to him like she did with Angel. This way she can still have a relationship without risking that pain. The fact she's closed off her heart stems directly back to the events of Becoming Pt. 2 (2x22), which left a permanent scar on her heart that won't be fully healed by series end."
I am really confused by Buffy's relationship with Riley. He says that she doesn't love him, as do you, mikejer, but then why does she run to the chopper when he is leaving and why is she so heart broken? And is the emotional scar from Angelus' actions or from the fact that she had to stab angel? And since he came back, isn't it really just because he left her, which means that it's nothing really extraordinary since rough breakups happen all the time. Like I said, I really don't understand Buffy's relational woes.

I would really like to hear everyone's oppinions, is there a thread on the discussion board about Buffy's relationships, and if so, could someone point me to it?

Thanks

I like the attention to detail, like when they mention that Buffy gave Johnathan the class protector award.

"The Prom" | View Comments58 | AustinAug 24, 2007
A couple of interesting notes, I think we see a little of Spike death wish coming out in buffy when she won't let anyone help her fight the hell-hounds. Why not? She just got dummed in a terrible way and she is going to the prom by herself. I think this accentuates how much Buffy really yearns for and needs a stabalizing force in her life beyond Giles' stoic self. Speaking of, I think it speaks volumes about how far G & B's relationship has come and strenghthened, that he can see through her words and actions exactly what's wrong with her and he knows how to comfort her. mikejer, you said in helpless that their level of trust is never the same again and while I agree that after someone has broken your trust once, the thought that they might do it again is always lurking in the back of your head, I think that this scene in the library proves that their relationship is incredibly strong and intimate.

Lastly I think that the award speech is the best happy/cry moment in the entire series, because although she can't reveal her secret identity, she is recognized by the people she has helped most, and she gets to enjoy a (if not the only) perfect moment.

I think it's interesting to note that when Gwen (intentionally) told Faith that she wasn't part of the intervention, This is when Faith first realizes that she can't trust her new friends or at least that they don't trust her. this might be why she chooses not to tell Buffy what ever it was she was thinking of at the end. I think this is the first tiny step down the dark path she follows in this season, and it is only exacerbated by Gwen's betrayal, the only person that hadn't let her down yet.

Chlorophorm has been around since at least the 1800s, plenty of time for the demon to hear about it. Plus while the demon may have been controlling Joyce, he way have left it to her own problem solving abilities to figure out how to subdue buffy, she knew that she couldn't take her by force like they did Willow, so he had her come up with an alternate plan.

There seems to be a time problem here, Giles says somewhere that spike, dru and angelus ravaged Europe for 100 years, however if dru was turned in 1860, that would only leave 40 years for her to work with angelus before he got his soul back.

In reguards to the unconsious thing, it has been pointed out before that vamps DO breathe, how else could spike smoke, and how else would it have been torture for the turukon (pardon the spelling) to force his head under water? They might not have much breath, not enough to administer CPR but I think that the evdience points to BtVS vampires as being chokeable.
Besides, we know vamps have blood, he could have just cut off her circulation to her brain.

While i agree that it would have been interesting to see the darker version of Buffy's experiance away from home, I don't see how it could have happened any other way. If she has all this inner strength and she has matured so much through the events of last season, how could she not have faced her problems and come out on top like she does in the ep. While I agree that it leaves something wanting, I think that this was ulitimately the way to go.

"Dead Man's Party" | View Comments68 | AustinAug 22, 2007
I thought the note that Joyce read at the end of Becoming was the I'm ok letter, at least thats how I took it. And about the zombies, especially their hokey music, I was under the impression they were supposed to be dumb, and I think kind of symbolic, crashing the party that Buffy didn't want to have, giving her a chance to do what she does best, save lives and fight evil. Kind of like saying, at least the Hellmouth welcomes you back.
I do agree, however, that they should have let the confontation pan out, I'm interested in what would have been said, and does she really ever work out these, issues, I mean other than revealing that the curse worked, do her friends really ever forgive her?

Also I might be reaching here but when Giles says, "of all the people I've buried, she was the first I loved." It seems more natural to say, she was the only one I loved, which leads me to believe that this is foreshadowing season 5 when he has to bury Buffy. Anyone agree?

What Exactly do you mean when you say atmospheric?

Being a lifeguard for two years, I couldn't help laughing at the swimmers lined up on the starting blocks, hanging like wet noodles, try tight as a bow string.

In reference to he "I invited him in" line, I think what she is saying is that even after they kissed, she didn't do anything to prevent him from coming in again, like hunting him or uninviting him, which she does later in the episode. Anyways thats my take on it based on the context.

Aww, Boo,Hoo no comments yet :)

Anyways I loved the banter between Giles and Jenny, I thought it was hilarious:
Jenny: So this is how you start our first date, by insulting my nation's pass time?
Giles: Did you just say date?
Jenny: You noticed huh?

Actually those blades really aren't that sharp, they are about half a centimeter wide and hardly have a knife edge, however I think the viewer is led to believe it to be a slicing death, as indicated by the way she swipes her skate across his throat rather than just bashing it in like she would have if she was trying to smash the wind pipe.

I just love the ice-skating scene, it's one of the rare, tranquil moments in the series when buffy gets to relax and be a normal, beautiful young woman, at least for a few moments.

"Ted" | View Comments79 | AustinAug 20, 2007
I am unsure of how they would have handled it if Ted had really been killed. Giles seems ready to forgive Buffy on account that the slayer does so much fighting that there is sure to be an accident sooner or later, and the council would no doubt have been void of any objections. The rest of the characters confound me, I find it interesting that Joyce is ready to defend Buffy from that law, evern after she killed her boyfriend.

The Demon Reminds me of the Joker.

I love the last scene with Joyce doing the typical mom-with-sick-girl routine, it's a breath of normality among the incredibly intense Angelus Saga.
