Love this ep. In fact I find it hard to fault it, which I guess is a blatant sign that you're going to rate it lower than me. ;)

Anyway, random question: was chaulk-full a pun?

"Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?" | View Comments2 | GroundedAug 23, 2006
I don't see how the pacing can be criticised either. :S

Random trivia: The bellhop's name is Frank Gillnitz, which is a combination of Frank Spotnitz and Vince Gilligan who were writer/producers on the X-Files, Tim's gig before Angel.

I'm still not seeing it. The episode is patient, not slow. Something is slow if it dallies too long without furthering the plot or character motivation. There are very few, if any, superfluous scenes in AYNOHYEB.

Of course, you can still fall asleep during it - but if you're paying attention the episode is deeply engrossing from start to finish.

Best episode ever. :D

"And then the next minute he's somehow a super badass? No way."

I don't get it... Ben

"Of course this is ruined by Angel's appearance in "THe Yoko Factor"."

Hehe, yeah but that was worth it for the big fight ;)

I haven't got to S5 of Angel as of yet, but as long as I don't have to see the Potentials again I don't mind what people claim about them."

Technically after Chosen they're no longer 'potentials' ;)

It's actually quite handy that Expecting and She, two of the poorest and therefore least rewatched episodes, contain most of said pratfalls. ;)

"Eternity" | View Comments7 | GroundedJul 30, 2006
I agree She and Expecting aren't up there, but as standalones I think Eternity and The Ring are both excellent at what they do. Not outstanding, I agree, but still good.

Standouts from S1: City Of, In The Dark, Bachelor Party (come on - I'm a Doyle fan!), I Will Remember You, Hero, Somnambulist, I've Got You Under My Skin, Five By Five, Sanctuary, To Shanshu In LA

I agree with Ryan - aside from a few blips (and EVERY season of A and B has these), A1 is 80+ all the way. :D

"Eternity" | View Comments8 | GroundedJul 30, 2006
"And yet you think S5 is poor? I can't understand it!"

Eh? When did I ever say that?

"Eternity" | View Comments9 | GroundedJul 30, 2006
I don't hate B5, but it doesn't have a hell of a lot good going for it either. Didn't we just do the Glory dissection not long ago? ;)

"Eternity" | View Comments10 | GroundedJul 29, 2006
What didn't you like about it?

"The lack of any sort of cohesiveness in overall arc and theme really turned me off."

Are you kidding? Lack of cohesiveness of theme?? Angel is 95% theme for crying out loud! ;)

"Eternity" | View Comments11 | GroundedJul 29, 2006
It doesn't have a blatantly obvious story arc, no, but I wouldn't class that as a negative factor. Besides, it's not completely arc-less. Both episodes 1 and 2 initiate sub-arcs that weave in and out of the standalones all the way up to the finale.

"Hero" | View Comments12 | GroundedApr 24, 2006
As much as I hate being spoiled, if I hadn't been spoiled for Hero I'd have been even more of a wreck for weeks afterwards. ;)

"Hero" | View Comments13 | GroundedApr 24, 2006
Anya: All the demons that walk the earth are tainted, are human hybrids like vampires. The Ascension means that a human becomes pure demon. They're different.

"I Will Remember You" | View Comments14 | GroundedApr 19, 2006
I like to think of it the other way around: an ep deserves a perfect score if it's so good that it's flaws don't matter. IWRY doesn't do that for me.

"I Will Remember You" | View Comments15 | GroundedApr 19, 2006
And not only that but it gets brought up in the next episode, which is also great. :D

"I Will Remember You" | View Comments16 | GroundedApr 18, 2006
Hokier than the Judge? What now? At least the Judge doesn't do the old flailing arms ninja posture.

"Sense and Sensitivity" | View Comments17 | GroundedApr 12, 2006
Are there are any other kinds of mobsters besides cliched mobsters? ;)

Personally, I vastly prefer this to Spin the Bottle. My biggest gripe would be that making everyone super-sensitive is a pretty roundabout way of breaking out of jail.

Couple of spelling mistakes: 'Sping the Bottle' and 'effected-Angel' instead of 'affected-Angel'.

Random factoid: On the UK VHS box the episode is billed as Sense & Sensibility on the front cover, but as Sense & Sensitivity everywhere else. :D

The bartender says this:

“She’s in here tonight. No Kevin though. I guess it wasn’t true love after all. (looks over to where Sharon was sitting next to Kate but doesn’t see her) Ah, she was there just a minute ago, getting it on with some Screech.”

Nothing like a Saved By The Bell reference. ;)buffyholic

"City of" | View Comments19 | GroundedApr 10, 2006
It's a perfect 100 for me too. :) Yes, there are tell-tale signs that it's a pilot - dodgy vamp makeup for a start - but the moment Tina bit the dust made it clear this series was going to be something very special.

Some fairly inconsequential grammatical things gleaned from the first four reviews:

- Capitalisation after colons. As I understand it (and I'm not exactly an authority on this, so slap me if I'm wrong), this one is correct:

"We also find out that he is half demon in a rather funny way: spikes come out of his face after a sneeze, just before which he strongly affirms he is completely human ('on my mother's side')."

while this one is not

"In fact, how he deals is a big part of this episode, along with the main theme of the entire series: Redemption."

- Random semicolons. No idea if this is purely a typo or not:

"Granted; it's no real secret the way it's presented..."

Small stuff, I know, and honestly it didn't affect my enjoyment of the reviews at all. Great job

"City of" | View Comments20 | GroundedApr 10, 2006
Like I said, it's no major issue. :D

"Lonely Hearts" | View Comments21 | GroundedApr 10, 2006
An unsung classic if ever there was one. :D

"Furthermore, episodes like this are what make the 'big' episodes like 5x22: Not Fade Away (in my opinion, one of the 'biggest' feeling episodes in the Whedonverse) matter"

Couldn't agree more - I hate to see people dismissing 'standalones' because they aren't arc-heavy or 'significant' enough.

Random nitpick: where did the name for the demon Screech come from? Doyle and Cordy call it a Burrower towards the end of the episode as I recall.

"I Fall to Pieces" | View Comments22 | GroundedApr 10, 2006
I'm not sure I would say the fact that villain doesn't perfectly parallel Angelus is a negative - although to be fair I'm not entirely sure if you are saying it's a negative in the review. :)

Some of my favourite Doyle quotes ever are in the ep:

After the hands-in-the-bed scene:
Angel: “How’s she doing?”
Doyle: “Numb. Did they get any prints?”
Angel: “Yeah.”
Doyle: “Good. So we can put him behind bars – for about 90 seconds until he skitters through ‘em."

Angel: “He’s coming undone.”
Doyle: “I’ll say.”
Angel: “No, I mean he’s out of control. He’s killing now.”
Doyle: “Anyone that comes between him and his obsession. (Looks over at Melissa) Don’t we stand between him and his obsession?"

There are a couple of pretty nasty plot contrivances in here too that I don't think you mentioned.

- Meltzer's eyes can float around while his hands have to crawl. I guess if he couldn't make his eyes float he'd have to wash them before he puts them back in their sockets. ;)
- Having sealed up the basement with tape, Doyle then proceeds to open the sewer grating the moment Meltzer appears. Wha? He then sticks his head down said grating in true horror movie style. Double wha?

"I Fall to Pieces" | View Comments23 | GroundedApr 10, 2006
I never really saw them aiming for a perfect comparison between the doctor and Angelus. It just didn't feel like they played that angle up that much - I mean, how many times in the episode is it actually mentioned? I just took him to be a villain that Angel saw to be sick and/or evil, but also understood because of his own background.

"I Fall to Pieces" | View Comments24 | GroundedApr 10, 2006
Oh I agree that they're relating the two, but I don't agree that to do that the villain must be more similar to Angelus. buffyholic
